Woodcarving Classes - Tuesdays 1 PM to 5 PM & Thursday 6 PM to 9 PM

There are two woodcarving displays housed within the museum. The first is the display of Gust Pufahl. Mr. Pufahl started carving as a boy and in 1932 was awarded the Popular Mechanics Magazine Master Carver Award. All of his pieces were carved from single pieces of wood. No parts were made individually and fastened or glued together.

In 1992, a new addition was added to the museum to house the woodcarving display created by Elmer Marting, Sr. Mr. Marting also carved his pieces from single pieces of wood. His work includes an amazing display of more than 300 chains made from 83 different woods. Mr. Marting's display of wooden chains is the largest single display of hand-carved wooden chains in the world.

The Willa Helwig History Center will be open for "Open WoodCarving" sessions every Tuesday Afternoon, 1:00 P.M. to 5:00 P.M., and every Thursday Evening, 6:00 P.M. to 10:00 P.M.

Open WoodCarving is a non-structured WoodCarving session or gathering of WoodCarvers, or anyone interested in WoodCarving, where everyone does their own type of WoodCarving. Any WoodCarver will help or give assistance to anyone else that may have questions on anything from WoodCarving woods, tools, tool sharpening, patterns, types of WoodCarving, or anything else pertaining to WoodCarving.

There is also a lot of friendly discussion and sharing of ideas and thoughts.

Coffee is always on, and cold pop is available in the refrigerator.

In addition to carving hundreds of wooden chains from 83 different woods, Elmer Marting, Sr. also carved many barnyard scenes. His attention to detail was extraordinary.

In many of his farm displays he included chickens, other livestock and dogs - again with an excellent eye for detail - all carved from a single piece of wood.
