Monona Memories
Do you have some old area postcards or Monona advertising memorabilia at home? We would love to be able to display your items in this section of the Monona Historical Museum web site. Just take a digital photo or scan of your item, describe its history and e-mail it to us. We'll put it up right away. It's like making a donation to the museum, but it never has to leave your collection!
The items below were given away by Monona and Monona area businesses in appreciation of their clients and customers. Often, they were given away around the Holidays, but in some cases were used as promotional items to promote sales.

This very interesting piece was possibly a cigar ash tray or a desktop container for small items like paper clips and pen tips. It was made by attaching a cast iron turkey foot to a small conch shell which had been cut in half. The message is hand painted. It was given away by J. A. Briar's Granite band Marble works in 1901.

Monona Leader (left) and P. W. McLelleand General Merchandise (right) - 1894. This photo is a great shot of early Monona; you can clearly see the boardwalk in front, the blanketed horse awaiting the ride home and many other details from a time long ago. The Monona Leader was the local newspaper - we have the original newspapers on file from 1892 through the present day in the Willa Helwig History Center.

Of note in this photograph is the old steam tractor parked in front of the machine shop in the lower right hand corner and the Ford logo on the end of the building. This building is now a private residence but the old Ford logo was restored to its original elegance when the building was converted to a home.
